Manchester comes South
Two bands tonight, raised in Manchester and indoctrinated with it's iconic musical dynasty. They bring their own DJ for the tour, he lavishes us with mostly nineties Mancunian heroes in the shape of The Stone Roses, Joy Division and Happy Mondays. All of which are noticeable in both bands musical influences .
First up are Pastel, a band of 5 years now who produce a tuneful wall of sound, slipping into early Oasis territory at times. They have a great ear for a tune and produce fairly long tracks which dip and soar, I look forward to listening to their recorded output.
Next onto the small Boileroom Stage are Afflecks Palace, named after an indoor independent market in their town, I guess another influence in their early lives. They have all the manc attitude you expect but back it with well crafted songs, well honed and perfect for performing live.
Between songs James Fender explains the bands misgivings from their recent history and the music industry. This has resulted in them deploying a grass roots method of increasing their fanbase, organising and booking their gigs and avoiding the big label pull to now have built up a growing dedicated following. This has to be applauded and it certainly was.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable trip out. Well worth the price of admission.
