Hugh Cornwell
Tour stops at The 1865 in Southampton
With a new album getting deserved plaudits Hugh Cornwell is putting in some hours with 24 UK dates before Christmas. Playing 2 sets a night both clocking in at about an hour you can only respect his ability to dive into what has to be an exhausting schedule.
The "Moments of Madness" album has I am sure pulled in some new fans alongside those who have dipped in and out since he left The Stranglers back in 1990. His first set tonight takes in numbers from his 10 solo albums and they all work well together, a well worked plan to separate from his previous chapter of life and song.
Hugh takes the hearty cheers and shout outs as he wanders off for a brief interlude to steal himself for The Stranglers second half. We are in for an upredictable mix of offerings as demonstrated by "Waltz In Black" which is greeted with a unanimous hail of joy from those fans in Black. Each night of the tour has had variations and tonight in Southampton we have the treat of "Peaches" being followed by "Tramp" from "La folie". "Nice'n' Sleazy" leads into "Souls" which was surely not in many souls songlist guesses for the night? Hangin' Around was my personal highlight but there were no lowlights to speak of and to finish with "Strange Little Girl" and "5 Minutes" was a fullstop of the highest calibre.
